COMPANION PARROT QUARTERLY SUBMISSION GUIDELINES...

Thank you for your interest in submitting material for the Companion Parrot Quarterly magazine. We are looking for all types of articles but prefer not to print generalized articles based on species description. We are particularly interested in personal experience with an emphasis on behavior and personality. Our readers seem to particularly enjoy stories about people’s experiences with their companion parrots and why the birds mean so much to them. Articles about rehabilitated or rescued birds and the progress of improving their lives are also well received. We also like to publish in-depth care articles. At this time, we are interested in articles on parrots we have not covered as well in the past … Conures, Ppoicephalus, Psittacula, Cockatiels, Budgies, Lovebirds, Eclectus, Caiques, and Macaws. However, we are also interested in good articles on African greys, Amazons and Cockatoos.

We will not print articles that contain rampant generalizations or stereotypical information about parrot species. All behavioral information must be trust-building and not trust-destroying. We prefer not to print articles written from the parrot's perspective unless they have specific merit for other reasons. Occasionally we like to publish quality fiction relating to parrots. We reserve the right to edit information that we believe does not represent the policies of the Companion Parrot Quarterly and PBIC, Inc.

Send Us Your Article for Consideration
We need an Windows-compatible diskette formatted so that it can be read by Word for Windows and/or the latest Pagemaker for Windows. If you do not have a computer, or access to one, we can accept a clear hard copy that we can scan. However, the preferred way to submit articles at this point is by e-mail attachments to staff@companionparrot.com  Please send an attached file that can be read by Word for Windows (this includes files saved as text). Or, you can insert the article in your e-mail message, but that is often harder for us to format. Please also send a hard copy to: Companion Parrot Quarterly - Articles, Companion Parrot Quarterly, 239 E 4th St. Loveland, CO 80537. Once we receive an article, we will let you know within 30 days or sooner if we plan on using it in the magazine. We will also try to let you know what issue it will be printed in. If you do not hear from us, please contact us again. The Companion Parrot Quarterly is published four times a year. Our writing deadlines are as follows

Spring Issue (Published in May/June) - Submissions deadline is February 5
Summer Issue (Published in August/Sept) - Submissions deadline is May 5

Drawings and cartoon submissions can be e-mailed as a .tif file, a JPG line drawing or mailed on disk to Sally Blanchard/CPQ, Companion Parrot Quarterly, 239 E 4th St. Loveland, CO 80537. Please do not send original artwork, but do send a quality copy/printout. If you do not have a computer/Internet access, send a quality copy by mail to the address above. If we need a better copy or an original we will contact you. Although we do not print photographs in the PBR, if you have photographs representing information in your article, please send us copies (these can not be returned). We can use these to help us create drawings or graphics that are appropriate to your article.

Payment for Published Articles and Artwork
If you do not require financial compensation and wish to donate your articles or artwork to the magazine, we would greatly appreciate this as the PBIC, Inc. is a small organization with limited funds. Because of this, we prefer not to pay for articles. However, if you want to be paid for your article you will need to let us know when you send it or send us an invoice. Short articles that take up 1-2 pages will receive $50. Longer articles will receive $75.00. Feature articles pay up to $100.00. If an article promotes a service or product, it will be considered as promotion for the writer. We do not pay for published Fun Page pieces or letters.

If we print an article whether the author is financially compensated or not, we require first publication rights, the right to sell the issue the article is in as a back issue as long as they remain in print, and the right to use the article in future CPQ article compilations. If this is objectionable to you, please let us know before the article is printed.

Cover illustrations pay $75-$100 depending on the work involved for us to make the drawing ready for publication. Feature article illustrations pay $25.00 each.

Publishing Rights
The Pet Bird Report maintains exclusive rights to an article for 4 months after it has been published in the Companion Parrot Quarterly (CPQ). An article published in the CPQ may not be published in another magazine, a newsletter, or on any web site for 4 months after publication in the CPQ without written prior arrangement from the PBIC staff. In publishing an article in the Companion Parrot Quarterly, we also have the right to publish the article on our web site or in a future CPQ Compilation. We can accept articles that have been published previously to a limited readership (for example-a bird club newsletter) but not in a national magazine. If it has been published in another national publication or on a "well-traveled" web site, then we could only print the article if it was rewritten and updated so that it basically has the same information but reads differently. If an article printed in the CPQ is later reproduced on a web site, it should be credited to the Companion Parrot Quarterly as follows "Reprinted with permission from the Companion Parrot Quarterly" with a link back to the CPQ web site at www.companionparrot.com Failure to follow the above protocol may jeopardize acceptance of future articles for publication in the Companion Parrot Quarterly. We reserve the right to republish any article that has been published in the PBR/CPQ in a future issue.
